Sound Project

For this project, we had to brainstorm 1-2 minute scenes and consider how to convey a specific plot using only sounds. We chose a scene and created a detailed outline of the sounds needed to represent our narrative realistically. Using online sound libraries and homemade foley effects, we produced a 1-2 minute soundscape bringing our outlined scene to life through meticulous sound design. Overall, the project challenged us to tell an engaging story using only our sound production skills.

My partner and I decided to use a shipwreck scene for our soundscape.

Here is the outline:

The sound project was one of the first heavy-duty projects we had to do for the class; it definitely took a lot of work to figure out how to layer the different sounds we wanted to portray.

First, we brainstormed all the sounds we could possibly include - waves crashing, wood creaking, people yelling, the ship breaking in half, etc. We then outlined the story arc and marked when each sound effect should come in. We put a large focus on gathering ambient ocean sounds like waves and seagull cries as well as ship noises like the foghorn and footsteps on the deck of the ship to set the scene.

We then gathered the sounds that would be present at sea and eventually the shipwreck itself. These sounds included fast winds, waves crashing, lightning/thunder, etc. The most challenging part was timing the sound effects properly to convey the narrative. Some sounds, like the boxes on the ship moving, got drowned out by the larger storm sounds, and we had to navigate that. We had to be careful about sound mixing so the shipwreck unfolding was clear. Additionally, we wanted the emotions of the scene to come through with yells and panic sounds.

After a lot of trial and error, we finalized a scene that was under two minutes taking listeners through the shipwreck.
